Tracking the Timeline: The Road to 'NEXT'

NExT-How things happened so far!

The National Exit Test has sparked controversy within the Indian medical student community . This article delved into its contentious journey, tracing its development from inception to the present.

01.Aug 8th 2019- NMC act notification was published in the official gazette.Clause 15(1-3) of the act mentioned that a national level exit test (NExT) will be implemented within two years of date of commencement of this act.

 

 

02. Sept 23rd 2022-Since NExT could not be implemented within the stipulated time ,

NMC took an extension of one year through "Removal of difficulties order dated 23/09/2022.

 

03.June 26th 2023- AIIMS Delhi released an advertisement regarding conduction of a mock test for NExT for final MBBS students.

 

04. June 27th 2023-

NMC conducted webinar for all final MBBS students and conveyed them that NExT will be implemented from this batch.

 

05.June 27th 2023-

Gazette notification for NExT was released .NExT was proposed in two steps-

Step 1- to replace final mbbs part 2 theory exam and the score of this step was proposed to decide rank for PG admissions also.

Step 2-After completion of internship as licentiate exam.

 

06.Sudden announcement of implementation of NExT on 2019 batch created unrest among students of this batch.They along with their parents started a protest across the nation.Social media campaign was started,letters were written to Health ministry and NMC.Students and parents started fund raising for seeking legal remedy.

 

07. July 15th 2023- Thirty Students of 2019 batch filed a writ petition in Supreme Court against the haphazard,untimely,unfair and piecemeal implementation of NExT on 2019 batch 

 

08.July 18th 2023- AIIMS Delhi canceled mock test.

 

09. July 13th 2023- On advice of MOHFW, NMC deferred NExT till further instructions from ministry.

 

10. July 24th 2023- Hon SC dismissed the writ petition of students but allowed them to approach HC.

 

11. Sept 14th 2023 - Confused students and parents approached NMC officials through the public hearing where they were told that NExT stands deferred till June 2024.

 

12. Oct.2023- MOHFW forms a 7 members committee to examine and compile data needed for smooth implementation of NExT on 2020 batch.

 

As the debate surrounding NExT continues, its future remains uncertain. What is undeniable is the significance of this examination in shaping the landscape of medical education in India. Whether it evolves into a harmonious solution or a persistent discord, only time will tell, but its impact will undoubtedly resonate for years to come.
