The Undergraduate Medical Education Board, an autonomous body under the National Medical Commission (NMC), has revised the eligibility criteria for NEET UG.
Previously, candidates were required to pass the 10+2 examination as regular students from any recognized board, with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English as core subjects. The latest amendment, however, expands the horizon for NEET aspirants by permitting students to undertaken study of the requisite subjects( Physics, Chemistry, Biology/ Biotechnology along with English) even as additional subjects after passing Class 12th from duly recognised boards by the concerned Govt.
This revised adjustment will be applied retrospectively, bringing relief to students who had previously applied for an Eligibility Certificate for studying abroad, only to face rejection. A public notice, dated 21.11.2023, issued by the NMC, officially communicates this pivotal decision, citing the UGMEB's resolution in a meeting held on the 14th of June earlier this year.
"This change has taken place after detailed delebrations while taking into considereation the New Education Policy, which permits great extent of flexiblity in the study of variopus subjects in Class 12th," says the Public Notice. It not only reflects the commitment of the regulatory bodies to adapt to the evolving landscape of education but also opens up new opportunities for a broader spectrum of students aspiring to pursue medical education. However, this decision of NMC has not gone down well with a large section of medical fraternity who want stringent eligiblity criteria for medical entrance examinations in the country.
