The declaration of NEET 2024 results has sparked significant controversy, with numerous allegations of irregularities emerging. A detailed letter addressed to the Chairperson of the National Medical Commission (NMC) by Ridhima Rao, a concerned candidate, highlights several alarming issues surrounding the exam, raising serious questions about its fairness and transparency.
According to the letter, the National Testing Agency (NTA), responsible for conducting NEET, announced the results on June 4, 2024, amid allegations of a paper leak. Despite widespread reports and arrests related to the leak, the NTA has not acknowledged or investigated these claims, opting instead to proceed with the result declaration.
One of the most striking irregularities noted is the unprecedented number of perfect scores. Sixty-seven students achieved a score of 720/720, a scenario that has never occurred before and is considered highly unusual. Particularly concerning is the fact that eight students from a single center in Haryana scored more than 718 marks, with six of them achieving a perfect score.
The letter also points out the improbability of scores such as 718 and 719, challenging the NTA's explanations as unsatisfactory. Additionally, there are concerns about undisclosed provisions for grace marks, which were not mentioned in the information brochure, potentially disadvantaging many students.
Another point of contention is the timing of the results announcement. The results were declared on the same day as the general election results, a move seen by many as an attempt to minimize media scrutiny. The letter also criticizes the significant increase in the cutoff scores, which has disproportionately affected the All India Ranks (AIR), making it three to four times harder for students to secure a similar rank compared to NEET 2023.
Many students who scored good marks in the exam have called for immediate action, urging the NMC to hand over the NEET 2024 exam and its results to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a thorough probe. She also demands that counseling sessions be halted until the investigation is complete and that all students scoring above 600 marks be screened to identify those who may have used unfair means.
The letter underscores the loss of trust in the NTA and calls for its removal from handling NEET-related matters. It emphasizes the urgent need for the NMC to address these issues to protect the future of thousands of medical aspirants and ensure the integrity of the examination process.
As the call for a CBI investigation grows louder, the NMC is under immense pressure to act swiftly and transparently to restore faith in one of India’s most crucial medical entrance exams.
