The action taken by the Hon'ble Supreme Court against Baba Ramdev and his company Patanjali under the Drugs and Magical Remedies Act stands as a landmark event in history. It lays bare the deception perpetrated in the guise of religion and faith, affecting the well-being of people nationwide. While Patanjali, as manufacturer, largely adheres to regulations governing the production of Ayurvedic medicines, Baba Ramdev's unverified assertions for sale have landed the company and its promotors in hot water.
Conversely, numerous other self-proclaimed faith healers blatantly flout healthcare regulations with impunity. Some argue that complaints against Baba Ramdev are a case of selective targeting, owing to his role as a proponent of Hinduism and traditional Indian culture. They contend that other individuals or organizations disseminating health misinformation under different religious or belief systems should also face consequences.
The hope is that actions taken against Baba Ramdev and Patanjali will extend control over all who exploit the health of vulnerable populations under the pretext of religious sentiments. Attempts by Baba's supporters to divert attention into an Ayurveda versus modern medicine debate are utterly condemnable and unjustifiable. No rational person would view it as a clash between two medical systems. Regardless of the medical approach, promoting unscientific remedies and baseless information is both unacceptable and illegal.
Ayurveda has taken care of health and well being of people in Indian subcontinent since antiquity and even today, millions of people continue to believe in and claim benefit from its practices despite the fact that in the last two thousand years, there has been hardly any progress in Ayurveda as a system of medicine. Even today, Ayurveda is practiced in the same old form with the same old facts, medicienes, remedies and principles as advocated by its founders Charak and Sushrut. It is this stagnation in development that often leads to criticism of Ayurveda.
On the other hand, the astounding progress, advancements, and research in modern medicine over the past three centuries are awe-inspiring, appreciated fully only by those who believe in or study science and posesss the scientific temper.
Meanwhile, media accountability concerning allegations of violations under the Drugs and Magical Remedies Act against Baba Ramdev is also a serious issue. Clear prohibitions exist against the dissemination of misleading information through publication of advertisements about medicines under this act, and the media cannot shirk its responsibility in this matter.
Baba Ramdev's episode is in fact a great opportunity to clean up the whole system and fix accountability.
