New Logo By NMC Creates Controversy

Since the new logo was revealed on the official website of National Medical Commission, a new controversy has errupted. Due to the changes made by NMC in the logo, there has been a debate on social media. Some doctors consider it a move influenced by a particular ideology, while others argue that viewing the God Dhanvantari from a religious perspective is inappropriate, as for centuries, the deity has been accepted as a symbol of good health and faith in Indian culture. One social media user  Abhishek Garg on X calls it a historic step by NMC.This is Bharat, going back to its roots.Lord Dhanvantari sybmolises medical history dating back to time of Samudra Manthan, says Abhishek in his tweet.

Dr Tarun Patni, senior paediatrician from Jaipur, Rajasthan says,"BHARAT written is fine but it would have been better if representation of modern medicine had been there too, instead of just centralized prominent placement of Lord Dhanwantari".

The Kerala unit of the Indian Medical Association has opposed this step by NMC, stating in a letter that medical practitioners of modern medicine oppose this. They argue that this move has harmed the scientific and secular image of NMC. The Kerala unit of IMA has demanded action on this matter from the Chairperson of NMC.

Some social media users are saying that  logo of  even WHO has originated from cultural beliefs and some mythology charcter. Official website of WHO gives following details of their logo-

WHO's emblem was chosen by the First World Health Assembly in 1948. The emblem consists of the United Nations symbol surmounted by a staff with a snake coiling round it.

The staff with the snake has long been a symbol of medicine and the medical profession. It originates from the story of Asclepius, who was revered by the ancient Greeks as a god of healing and whose cult involved the use of snakes. Asclepius, incidentally, was so successful at saving lives that, the legend goes, Hades the god of the underworld complained about him to the supreme god Zeus who, fearing that the healer might make humans immortal, killed Asclepius with a thunderbolt.

Interestingly logo of Indian Medical Association and many other medical associations in India carries the images of  of two snakes in their logos.

National IMA has also released a letter titled " Re envision the NMC Logo" in which they  have called upon NMC to take corrective stept to adopt a logo which does not contradict the oath and duty of Doctors towards all the citizens with complete neutrality. In this letter IMA has categorically mentioned that the entire medical fraternity in India is sadly disturbed by this approach of NMC.

Dr Vijay Batra, vetern surgen from Sawai Madhopur says,"We have accepted many allegorical personifications without a bit of protest. We have never objected to the blindfolded lady providing moral force to our judicial system while the planet 'Saturn' is revered as Lord of Justice in the Vedic system. Many times a day we bow our heads toward the eye of Horus and accept it with reverence without an iota of protest. We adore our Aprons with snakes without objection. Why do pseudo-secularists not raise their voice on all these foreign symbols? Lord Dhanvantri is perceived as an embodiment of Lord Vishnu. How and Why should it be clamoursome?"

"It is disgusting that some of our friends who have been given responsible positions project their agenda as a fraternal opinion without a referendum", adds Dr Batra.

Meanwhile, in a video Dr Yogendra Malik has clarified that NMC had approved the Logo in 5th and 6 th meeting. In the approved logo the image of the deity was in black and white and the word Bhartiya was written. Now the image has been made colorful and the word Bhartiya has been replaced by the wors Bharat.

Interestingly, logo of erstwhile MCI  had the image of  the Greek God Asclepius. One social media user has posted that,"It took seven decades to replace the Greek God with the Indian God"
