The recent tragedy at RG Kar Medical College, where a postgraduate student was brutally raped and murdered, has sparked outrage and a unified demand for justice across India's healthcare sector. Medical professionals, under the banner of the Medical Service Centre (MSC), have rallied together, condemning the horrific act and expressing their deep concern over the safety and security of healthcare workers nationwide.
The incident, which has deeply shaken the medical community and the nation, is seen as more than just an isolated attack—it is perceived as a broader threat to the dignity and safety of all healthcare professionals, especially women, said Dr Ansuman Mitra Secretary, Medical Service Centre.
In response to the mounting pressure from a relentless movement led by medical students and junior doctors, the principal of RG Kar Medical College, Dr. Sandeep Ghosh, has resigned. However, his subsequent appointment as the principal of Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital (CNMCH) by the West Bengal State Government has been met with widespread outrage. The medical community views this as a grave injustice and a sign of administrative indifference, fueling suspicions of foul play at higher levels.
The MSC has laid out several demands in light of these developments:
1. Immediate Release of the Post-Mortem Report: The group insists that the post-mortem report be made public immediately to reveal the true nature of the crime.
2. Judicial Inquiry and Punishment: They are calling for a swift judicial investigation to identify and prosecute those responsible, regardless of their status.
3. Accountability for Dr. Sandeep Ghosh: The MSC demands that Dr. Ghosh be included in the investigation and barred from holding any future position of authority within any medical institution.
4. Improved Safety and Working Conditions: The MSC is urging the government to address security flaws and infrastructure deficiencies in hospitals to ensure a safer working environment for all healthcare professionals.
The movement, which began as a response to the administration's attempt to downplay the incident as a "suicide," has gained significant traction. The protesting medics successfully demanded a magistrate-supervised post-mortem, leading to the resignation of the principal.
However, the MSC has stated that their fight is far from over. They have called upon healthcare professionals nationwide to join in their cause, emphasizing that this struggle is not only about the victim but also about the safety and dignity of every healthcare worker and woman in the country.
Members of United Private Clinics & Hospitals Association of Rajasthan(UPCHAR) under leadership of State President Dr Kamal Chand Saini, Vice President Dr Arun Soora and Dr LC Dhaka gave memorandum to District Collector of Jhunjhunu in which UPCHAR has asked for exemplary punishment to the accused and preventive measures in the state.
The solidarity of Resident Doctors' Associations, Junior Doctors' Associations, and other healthcare workers has been crucial in propelling this movement forward. As a next step, the MSC has announced plans for a nationwide "pen-down" strike, including an OPD and non-emergency boycott starting on August 14, urging all healthcare workers to stand united in their fight for justice and improved working conditions ,said Dr Ansuman Mitra.
