NEET Irregularities: Students' Anger Shows No Signs of Abating
(Editorial)

The frustration and anger of students over NEET irregularities continue to simmer, with ongoing protests by students and their parents across the streets. Following the swearing-in of the Modi government and the allocation of ministerial portfolios, students have now launched a campaign to write to the government and the Ministry of Higher Education.

In this vein, students have written to the Minister of Higher Education demanding that the NEET 2024 exam and its results be investigated by the CBI. Twenty-five lakh students are in a state of confusion, making it imperative for the government to find an immediate resolution to this situation.

While the court has acknowledged the breach of the exam's sanctity and directed the NTA to respond, students are disappointed that the court has not halted the counseling process. Legal experts note that the petition heard on June 11 was filed before the NEET results were announced and did not mention the irregularity involving grace marks. However, in the next two to three days, other petitions will be heard where the issue of grace marks will be presented to the court.

It's worth noting that in a press conference on June 8, the NTA itself admitted to the allegations of irregularly awarded grace marks and announced the formation of a four-member committee led by Professor Pradeep Joshi to investigate these grace marks and other irregularities. Students, parents, and experts have raised questions about this committee, arguing that it does not align with the fundamental principles of justice for the accused institution to investigate itself.

Many media channels are now covering this issue during their prime-time broadcasts, with some labeling it a major scandal. Following the court's questioning of the exam's sanctity, there is speculation about whether the NEET exam will be conducted again. Given that this matter concerns the future of millions of students, it is of utmost seriousness. Students and their parents hold onto the hope that they will receive justice from the honorable Supreme Court.

An open letter  written to Higher Education Minister mentions that-

1. The NEET exam held on May 5 was leaked at several locations. Bihar Police registered a case and arrested dozens of accused. Burnt exam papers were also recovered from them.

2. The FIR filed by Bihar Police clearly mentions that an organized gang was responsible for the paper leak. The chain of custody of the examination was broken, leading to the leak. Many students were given answers to memorize.

3. Many candidates from states like Odisha and Jharkhand conspired to have their exam centers moved to Godhra, Gujarat, thousands of kilometers away from their home states. The principal of that school, some staff members, some parents, and students were arrested.

4. The NEET exam paper was available on Telegram channels on May 4. Many students made videos of it and shared it on social media. In today’s age, content on social media can reach any corner of the world in an instant. This serious matter should have been investigated by cybercrime experts, which has not been done to date.

5. The Bihar Economic Offense Wing investigated the paper leak incident, but media reports suggest that the original NEET paper was either not provided to them for comparison by NTA or was provided with a delay.

6. The incident in Sawai Madhopur, Rajasthan was not taken seriously by NTA, despite the leaked paper appearing on social media by 4 PM.

7. Dummy candidates who appeared for the exam at many locations were also arrested. A case was registered against a student from Ajmer Medical College.

8. Some students have also complained that their results do not match the answers they marked on their OMR sheets.

9. Grace marks were given arbitrarily to some  students for time loss on centre without any provision for the same  in the information bulletin.

It further mentions ,:All these facts and media reports clearly indicate that there were massive irregularities in this examination. In such a situation, the authenticity of this paper and the credibility of NTA have been compromised. In the past month, NTA has not provided any information to candidates and the media regarding the investigation of these issues. Instead, it announced the results ten days ago, trying to cover up the gross negligence in the examination.Even in the press conference held on June 8, only grace marks were discussed, and the paper leak issue was not addressed."

Through this letter students have asked for a CBI enquiry of the exam and its result.
