Lok Adalat orders in favor of hospital, Patient told to settle pending hospital bill with interest

A patient who suffered a heart attack underwent emergency angioplasty at a private hospital in Bikaner, Rajasthan. Before the treatment, the patient's family was told it would cost Rs. 180,000, of which Rs. 110,000 was collected from them as advance. After the treatment, the family created a ruckus at the hospital, caused damage, and left without paying the remaining amount.

The hospital filed a case in the Lok Adalat. Despite repeated summons, neither the patient nor their family appeared before the court. The court ordered the patient to pay the outstanding amount with interest.

I think it is a first in a case of doctor-petitioner versus a patient-accused in a Lok Adalat. For long there was no easily approachable or swift-actionable mechanism of redressal for doctors/hospitals intending fees recovery. One had to approach a civil court which takes a toll on precious time of practicing doctors. It could be a trend setter for doctors, who face similar issues, in future.
