In a significant development government is mulling over establishing a Health Regulator for achieving the target of insurance for all.
In a letter written by Secretary, Ministry of Finance to Secretary Health & FW, it has been proposed that for achieving the target of insurance for all, insurance penetration needs rapid scaling up. In the case of health insurance there appears to be a need for establishing a Health Regulator for achieving this goal.
The letter mentions that the National Health Authority is already making efforts to build the National Health Exchange, an idea which has been welcomed by the insurance industry. A Health Regulator would play a vital role in ensuring that this digital transformation aligns with efficiency of the providers ecosystem.
A meeting of General Insurance Council with senior executives of leading insurance companies, National health authority and department of financial services is being planned to explore the possibility of setting up a Health Regulator so that health insurance is made more affordable and ubiquitous
